Oxford dictionaries for everyone

The Oxford English Dictionary was first published from 1884 to 1928 and its online version is now being completely revised. The OED set the standard for large, comprehensive dictionaries the world over. But even before the first edition was finished, editors began creating versions of 'the Oxford dictionary' for more general, day-to-day use.

Today Oxford University Press publishes hundreds of dictionaries, from the tiniest paperbacks to the full 20-volume OED, in CD-ROMs and online versions, for everyone from crossword-solvers to professors.

Here is a selection from the current range:

Oxford Dictionary of English — a breakthrough in defining the language of today, based on analysing a vast new body of evidence of how people are using words now. The latest edition is available with free access to the online version.

Concise Oxford English Dictionary — the standard one-volume home and office desk dictionary (now in its 11th edition).

Shorter Oxford English Dictionary — a two-volume condensed version of the historical OED, more affordable for general readers (now in 5th edition).
