In this issue of OED News we take stock of the present situation: the Chief Editor, John Simpson, writes about the state of the project today, while Janet Caldwell provides an update on the OED on CD-ROM, and Philip Durkin gives us a glimpse of the intricacies of the work of our etymology group.

One major change is that we have said goodbye to Tim Benbow, formerly the Director of the Dictionaries Department, who has left us to become Facilities Director here at OUP. We wish him the best of luck in his new position. He is replaced as Director of the OED by Ewen Fletcher.
